Umit Benan wanted to be a filmmaker, but diverted to fashion, keeping the urge to tell stories intact. Having been raised in Istanbul in the 1980s, he absorbed the bold fashions and powerful masculinity of the time, further delving into the contrasts and layers of the 1990s as a teenager studying abroad. Umit Benan worked for different designers in New York and then Milan, until he settled in Italy in 2006, where he started an ongoing journey that today brings to the expressive maturity of UMITBENAN. Relying on a bevy of experiences that offered both a life and a fashion imprint, Umit Benan heralds a particular brand of dressmaking: one in which clothing an individual is akin to costuming a character for the movie of real life, bringing out the best self.
